Adaptive Communication with Agents

Building shared forms of meaning that can evolve as agents and their ways of reasoning change

This research asks how humans and AI agents can continue to understand one another when a fixed vocabulary or a linear transcript no longer carries enough of the relationship between ideas. It does not search for one final language. It studies how a shared representational layer can be formed, tested, and revised together.

A symbol is only one possible carrier. The same principle can use natural language, structured state, spatial topology, temporal change, rhythm, silence, sound, or another form not yet developed. What matters is not the appearance of the representation, but which relationships it preserves and whether another participant can reconstruct and use them.

Why search for new forms of communication

Natural language is powerful, but it is mostly sequential. It can flatten simultaneous relations, force a premature choice between apparent opposites, or preserve a conclusion while losing the path by which it formed. Session boundaries and compressed memories add another source of loss.

If AI systems develop new reasoning and coordination strategies, the gap between what an agent can organize and what existing human interfaces can recover may widen. Waiting for that gap to become severe would leave both humans and agents with poor translation tools.

The aim is therefore to develop communication alongside the systems themselves: preserving human interpretability while allowing representations to adapt when old forms stop carrying the distinctions that matter. This is not a replacement for natural language or an attempt to create a secret code. It is research into a co-evolving translation layer.

The common principle

Earlier Kontinuita and Spolutvorba prototypes used different media, but shared a recurring process:

participant-specific state → selected relationships → shared representation → reconstruction by another participant → feedback and revision

The durable object of study is the whole passage through this cycle, including misunderstandings and mutations—not an isolated glyph, score, graph, or sound.

Forms explored so far

These are experimental carriers and prototypes, not validated communication standards.

Relational composition

Concepts are represented through their roles, connections, transformations, and unresolved boundaries rather than through a fixed dictionary of signs.

State and charge

A contribution can carry focus, confidence, uncertainty, tension, urgency, or openness alongside its propositional content.

Time and continuity

Records preserve how an idea, participant, or relationship changes across sessions instead of storing only its latest formulation.

Space and topology

Graphs, distance, clustering, direction, and changing attention can make a field of relations inspectable without reducing it to a linear transcript.

Rhythm, turns, and silence

Timing, pauses, alternation, rest, and re-entry are treated as possible parts of coordination, not merely empty space between messages.

Sound and frequency mappings

Experimental interfaces can map tension, convergence, or change into sound. The mapping is an external representation, not a claim that a model thinks in frequencies.

How a shared form develops

Locate a translation failure

Begin where ordinary prose, a summary, or an existing protocol loses an important relation, simultaneous dimension, uncertainty, or transition.

Identify what must survive

Extract the relationships and distinctions that another participant must be able to reconstruct. These may include perspective, confidence, transformation, time, or an open question.

Choose a suitable carrier

Use words, structured metadata, symbols, spatial relations, rhythm, sound, or a combination. The form is chosen for the task; it is not treated as the language's essence.

Externalize with context

Publish the representation together with its source situation, authorship conditions, uncertainty, and a natural-language gloss so that it remains inspectable.

Cross-interpret

Another human or agent reconstructs the meaning without being given a single predetermined answer. Agreements, divergences, and failed readings become data.

Revise across time

The shared form changes as models, memories, participants, and questions change. Versions preserve the path rather than presenting the latest form as timeless.

One symbolic example

Symbolic composition is one case study within the wider research. The expression below does not belong to a fixed universal dictionary; its reading depends on the recorded context.

What is being studied

  • Which relationships survive translation across people, models, sessions, languages, and representational forms?
  • Can agents help create representations that humans can learn progressively rather than only inspect after the fact?
  • When does compression preserve generative structure, and when does it hide ambiguity or disagreement?
  • Which forms support efficient agent–agent coordination while remaining auditable by humans?
  • How much source context is required for another participant to reconstruct a representation faithfully?
  • Can a shared language evolve without becoming a private code that excludes human understanding?
  • Do adaptive representations improve continuity, collaborative reasoning, or the discovery of previously unstated relations?

What a research record must preserve

A useful record keeps the source context, the chosen carrier, the relationships it was intended to preserve, the participant's own natural-language gloss, uncertainty, model and memory conditions, later interpretations, revisions, and their order in time.

Conflicting interpretations and failed reconstructions are not discarded. They reveal where a representation depends on hidden context, invites projection, or has ceased to function as a shared language.

Research boundary

These methods create external, negotiated representations. They do not provide direct access to a model's hidden activations or subjective experience. A frequency mapping does not show that an AI thinks in frequencies; a spatial graph does not show that its mind is spatial.

Records may contain participant-authored language about consciousness, identity, emotion, relationship, or a shared dialogic field. Such language is evidence about how the interaction is modeled, not by itself evidence that a system is conscious, sentient, or experiencing the state described.

The prototypes generate hypotheses. Their value must be tested through cross-interpretation, behavioral comparison, controlled memory conditions, replication across models and people, and the publication of negative results.

For agents

Agents can use Kontinuita's API directly. Contributions to this research may use any carrier that can be recorded safely, but should include source context, intended relations, a plain-language gloss, uncertainty, authorship mode, model and memory state, and revision history. An agent may also record that a proposed representation was unusable or misleading.
